11 Reasons Why People in Pittsburgh Should Be Proud of Their City

What would be the best description for the beautiful city of Pittsburgh? Is it a great mix of cultures and opinions? A food paradise? Or can it be characterized as the birthplace of lots of champions in varied domains such as sports, education, technology and medical inventions? Of course, Pittsburgh also has its flaws, but its inhabitants love it and call it home nonetheless. Read on to find out 11 reasons to be proud of this great city. Do you agree or not?

Did you know that Metropolis Magazine stated that Pittsburgh is one of the World’s Most Livable Cities, a title received in 2015 because of the local community’s struggle to preserve historic landmarks but also for its innovation? Pittsburgh is known to have the most “green building square footage” as compared to any other city in the world.

Pittsburgh has been certified as one of the Most Livable Cities in the United States for six times since the beginning of the 21st century.

We live in a technological center of activity. So much that The Huffington Post placed this amazing city at number eight on the list of “Top 10 Cities Techies Should Consider Moving to in 2016.”

This place has everything you need to enjoy life to the fullest; for example, you can choose to swim, go hiking or simply enjoy the outdoors. These are some of the reasons for which Pittsburgh got the fifth (best) place on the list of “2016’s Best and Worst Cities for an Active Lifestyle", made by the forum Wallet Hub.

Are you a food aficionado? Pittsburgh is renowned for its good food, a fact recognized by Zagat when it named Pittsburgh the Top Food City in 2015.

We live in the City of Champions. In this city, we are surrounded by amazing people. Take The Steelers for example. They are first in the NFL all-time Super Bowl having six wins while the Penguins also won their fourth Stanley Cup Sunday night. Therefore, yet another Pittsburgh team has won a professional title, adding it up to four titles for this city, since 2005. Pittsburgh is known as the “City of Champions” ever since 1979 when both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates won professional titles, and it proudly holds this title to this day.

We also like to give back to the community. This city's inhabitants have raised over $40 million while participating in the Annual Day of Giving, for the last 6 years.

Pittsburgh is also famous for the medical novelties that happen here. For example, Jonas Salk has developed the polio vaccine in 1952, and the first heart, kidney and liver transplant was carried out at Presbyterian University Hospital in 1989.

The Steel City also claims some impressive premieres: the first baseball stadium in the country (1909); the first banana split (1904); the first Bingo game (the 1920's); the first Mr. Yuck stickers (1971) and many others.

Our city's beautiful landscape has inspired Hollywood to shoot movies here (The Dark Knight Rises) or to register television shows (Outsiders) all throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Pittsburghers are known to be very friendly people who easily start a conversation and like to help everyone.

Since 1979, Pittsburgh remained the only city that has had two titles in the same calendar year (1979). Out of the ten cities that have won multiple championships in the same season, The Steel City is the smallest one. In addition, it is 300,000 people smaller than the next largest city, Baltimore. So, Pittsburgh might be small, but it has a strong influence.

Steeler Bars, a bar dedicated to the Steelers and its fans, is another great location situated outside of the city. In fact, every state in the US has a Steeler bar but there are also bars in 22 different countries worldwide.

Pittsburgh is on top of the sporting world. The Pirates have reached three consecutive times the playoffs, the Penguins made it ten successive times and the Steelers haven't lost a season since 2003. Any Pittsburgh sports fan is very proud right now.
