VIA Music & New Media Festival: October 6 – 9 at Ace Hotel

This festival will make Pittsburgh the epicenter of audiovisual culture and experimental music for the duration of four days. With the occasion of its 7th edition, the previously nomadic VIA Festival will make use of the city’s newest boutique hotel, turning it into its flagship laboratory for the latest in audio and visual presentations. VIA and East Liberty have been known to collaborate in the past as well, with the festival taking place at an underground venue at 6119 Penn (RIP) in its formerly vacant urban spaces. The carefully organized festival features more than 40 artists and 15 main events, emphasizing unlikely pairings in technology, new media, sound, and performance. Staunchly multi-sensory, multi-disciplinary, and multi-format, the lineup features a lot of important names, bringing together legends and legends in the making, some of them making their debut in Pittsburgh. To name but a few, there is the Cannes winner Giant, the iconic rapper Rakim, the South Bronx pioneers ESG and the Rihanna collaborator Sam Rolfes. The festival features some free highlights as well, from a master class with Brooklyn performance duo Fluct to a discussion with renowned black female artists to a hands-on coding and digital drawing game titled Exquisite Donut. But what truly sets VIA apart from the other many other similar festivals is the many opportunities it offers to the attendees to be active participants in featured artworks as well as its dedication to embracing local artists. By projecting out from Ace, VIA can host satellite events at non-traditional spaces, from theaters and libraries to universities, pop-up galleries, and more.

Pittsburgh Abides Big Lebowski Fest: October 8 at Spirit

David Huddleston, famous for the title role he played in The Big Lebowski, the iconic 1998 Coen brothers film, passed away in  August, leaving fans everywhere in mourning. With the purpose of giving 412 achievers their annual fix of the cult flick while also anointing new generations of Dudes, this Pittsburgh festival is a homegrown take on an eccentric festival that is held all around the globe. Take up your beige bathrobe, prepare a White Russian and emit clever Dudeisms, when Spirit becomes a playpen for everyone’s favorite slacker. The 4th annual shindig isn't just a simple movie screening; it is, in fact, bigger than ever, having two floors of Dudery hosted by none other than the charismatic artist Alexi Morrissey. Let yourself be an achiever by taking part in rounds of trivia, ear spitting, ringer toss, riding a zip line, or, why not, competing in a citywide scavenger hunt where you are required to bring back a toe by 3 p.m. Take your ideas for a Lebowski sequel and pitch them to actor/director Patrick Jordan, enter the competition judged by Attack Theatre’s Peter Kope and show off your dance move or try the mini-golf course designed by Pittsburgh artists and score under par.

FUSE@PSO presents Bartók + Björk at Heinz Hall: October 19

On the 19th of October, you are invited to meet the lovechild (musically speaking, of course) of Béla Bartók, the Hungarian composer, and Björk, the Icelandic icon. You will most definitely be surprised by the synergistic sonic results. If you didn't get the chance to experience the stirring debut of conductor Steve Hackman’s FUSE@PSO last year, take comfort in the knowledge that you have not one, but three incredible opportunities to catch the cutting-edge series as it returns. FUSE fearlessly ventures where most symphonies don’t dare and, by pairing contemporary and classical masterpieces, creates bold musical hybrids. Hackman will prepare for its 2016 launch a vigorous and evocative combination of Bartók’s 1943 Concerto for Orchestra, and 11 prominent songs from Björk’s seminal albums — Homogenic, Post, and Debut. This unique concert will show the vocal talents of Carla Kihlstedt, Kristin Slipp, and Malia Civetz. With Hackman running the show, the production will explore Bartók’s love of eastern European folk music and Western art music together with the broad vision of Björk, which goes from jazz to pop, electronica, and more. A lively happy hour is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. in Heinz Hall’s majestic garden, giving you the chance to sample snacks, specially-priced drinks, activities, and even to mingle with the musicians. The concert stands to begin at 6:30 p.m., features open seating and allows drinks. Don't forget to buy tickets.

Walkabout Apple Whiskey Weekend: October 21, 22, 23

This is the perfect place to visit for those who like to bob for apples and drink them in their whiskey afterward. Celebrate the fall harvest season by channeling the spirit of Johnny Appleseed, the one who introduced apple trees to Pennsylvania, and get the chance to be amid the first to experience Wigle‘s new cider-infused whiskey at this weekend-long festival. During their time at Wigle‘s Strip District distillery and Northside barrelhouse, Walkabouters will taste the new release, get to take selfies with Johnny Appleseed, bob for apples, drink fall-specific cocktails and eat from food trucks. The festivities are family-friendly and free-of-charge and will feature live music by The Lonely Lights and Chris Hannigan, apple-themed games with City of Play and presentations by the Apple Whiskey development team. Wigle’s latest concoction, created in association with Chatham University’s Food Studies Program, is a base of wheat and rye whiskey, resulting from hand-blending 15-gallon casks. Experience for yourself the robustly-flavored results while enjoying this custom mix of subtle sweetness and warm apple cider on a cool fall day.

Night of 1,000 Elvises at The Warhol Museum: October 22

By using pop icons and everyday objects, Warhol took multiplying to a whole new level and made it a global art phenomenon. Don't worry when you’ll start seeing much more than double as we assure you, your sight is perfectly fine. The museum’s trademark fundraiser is back again, where Warhol’s favorite subjects will be given a creative new twist. Whether you prefer him as a rockabilly bad boy, a 1970s lounge crooner, or a guitar-slinging Army sergeant, you should start crafting as soon as possible your over-the-top Elvis outfit for this glittery tribute to everything related to The King—and King of Pop.  Nonother than El Vez (the singer and songwriter Robert Lopez), the self-proclaimed “Mexican Elvis,” will be channeling the Tupelo tornado; this will be his first local performance since 1998. Attendees can dance Memphis-style during DJ sets, get Elvis-inspired temporary tattoos, or shop for popular Warholian merchandise. Elvises will be given clearance for the museum’s seven floors and will also be the first to see the new Andy Warhol exhibition, My Perfect Body. The unique show that features over 200 artworks takes us on an exploratory journey of Warhol’s mind, from the ways he saw the human body — tormented, sculpted, abstracted, and idealized — to his own personal struggles with physical appearance. The VIPs will have access to a private underground “Viva Las Vegas” lounge with unlimited drinks, hors-d'oeuvres and, of course, casino games.

Night of the Living Dead N’at: October 27 – November 12

For those who are not aware, George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 seminal cult classic that literally spawned a new genre, forever cementing the love affair between horror movies and Pittsburgh. With Halloween just around the corner, Bricolage decided to resurrect (pun intended) the cinematic classic and add it a particular yinzer twist. Midnight Radio Series, a Bricolage longtime fan favorite, also returns to render a humorous reinterpretation of the movie, complete with an up-to-date “yinzerized” script adjusted by Tami Dixon, the company’s producing artistic director. Meant as a homage to the Godfather of Zombies, the spooky show will benefit from the eerie live music provided by Cello Fury, the classic rock powerhouse. Midnight Radio will use its trademark 1940s radio format to also present commercial spoofs, live Foley sound effects, and a dub over the film screening by using Dixon’s clever script. For gore galore, be sure not to miss the pre-show Happy Half-Hour and The Brains N’at Ball on Halloween.
