Travel Tips: The Best of Labor Day in Pittsburgh

pittsburgh limo servicePittsburgh is gorgeous during the fall so whether you live there or plan to visit, Labor Day weekend is the ideal time to experience its beauty. As with other states, Pittsburgh has its own special plans for the holiday, promising something fun for everyone.

Great Labor Day Adventures

  • Kickoff and Rib Festival – To get things started, the city hosts the Labor Day Kickoff and Rib Festival, which will take place September 3rd through 7th on the North Shore of Heinz Field. This will be the 16th annual event, which includes free concerts daily by local and national music artists, more than 10 vendors creating the best ribs in the country, tons of other food and drink, and for the children, pony rides and games. 

  • USS LST 325 – If you are a history buff, visiting the landing ship/tank USS LST 325 would be a real treat. This ship is located on the North Shore of Riverfront Park and was specifically built for battle in 1942. There are other ships that can be toured as well, also from the World War II era. Tours will start on September 2nd and end on the 8th.

  • Frick Art & Historical Center – For jazz lovers, this is the perfect venue. Different jazz bands will perform on the lawn of the center, focusing on the famous composer from Pittsburgh: Billy Strayhorn.

  • South Side Outside Paddle and Music Festival – This is another great Labor Day activity. The event will be held on September 6th on the south side of Riverfront Park. Racing from Birmingham to the Clemente Bridges and back will be stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers. In addition, you can participate in a 5K race or simply enjoy live music and great food.

  • Festival of Combustion – On September 5 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm is a great event for the entire family. This festival focuses on hot art making processes including molten lava, ceramics, and cast iron; you can even design a glass mosaic. You can also enjoy local food items, delicious ice cream, and live music.

  • Food Culture Tour – This particular event is held throughout the city on September 5th. As you make your way from one food location to another, you will have the opportunity to enjoy different flavors created by master chefs.
