Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival

The jazz fan base isn’t the biggest and, statistically speaking, you are probably not a jazz fan yourself. Nonetheless, you don’t have to be a jazz fan to enjoy the coolest and funkiest festival of the summer; the International Jazz Festival. This year’s jazz festival will be hosted by Citizen’s Bank and is set to go down from the 15th to the 17th of June in Downtown Pittsburgh. During this period, downtown will be transformed into a jazz club for three days, complete with beer gardens, jam sessions, and concerts that will keep you occupied all weekend long.

Note, there will be both free and ticketed events at the Wilson Center, which will feature artist talks, master classes, and musical performances from more than 100 local and international jazz artists including Shemekia Copeland, Marcus Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Kenny Garrett, Noel Quintana, Polly Gibbons, DJ Selecta, Cory Henry & the Funk Apostles, DJ Selecta, and many more. With a chilled out and intimate setting, this is one event that you don’t want to miss out on this month.

Vintage Grand Prix

The Vintage Grand Prix is scheduled to go down between the 7th and 21st of June; this is the United States’ largest street race, featuring 10 days of racing, parties, car shows, motor sports events, and parades. The purpose of this event is to put together the most comprehensive vintage automotive show and, in the process, raise funds for the autistic and developmentally disabled people of the Steel City. This event has raised over $5million since 1983, so you will not only be enjoying the show but taking part in a worthy cause. Head on down to Schenley Park and enjoy the 37th annual Grand Prix this June.

Snowball Day

Make your way to the Carnegie Science Center along Allegheny Avenue on the 21st of June. Surprisingly, at this event you get to pay whatever you are willing to pay for general admission and if you bring your own snowball you will be able to launch it into the Ohio River so long as the weather permits. Note, the launching site will only be open between 10 am and 3 pm, so you may want to get there early.

Anthrocon

Anthrocon is an event specifically tailored for people who are fascinated with anthropomorphic. This will be the 20th annual event of its kind and it will go down from the 30th of June through to the 3rd of July at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. This is also the 11th year in a row that the event has found its way to Pittsburgh. In celebration of the 20th Anthrocon Anniversary, the theme to this year’s event is ‘the Rolling Twenties’. One of the main highlights of the event will be the Fursuit Parade which is scheduled for the 2nd of July at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center from 2 pm.

Over the years Anthrocon events have raised more than $200,000 for animal-friendly organizations in Pennsylvania and this year the lucky beneficiary is the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. The event brings together enthusiasts, artists, animators, puppeteers, and costumers who get to engage in seminars, workshops, costume-building, and animation in a welcoming setting.

Kaiju Big Battel

Head over to the Byham Theater on the 29th of June between 8 am and 10 pm for the Kaiju Big Battel. This is one event you will have to see for yourself to believe. The planet is under threat when large monsters clash and fight in spectacular battles. Kaijus (Monsters) you can expect to see at the event include Sky Denver, a blue alien that devours everything in its path, a hare-sage named Dusto Bunny, a space bug known as Uchu Chu, and a rouge scientist who goes by Dr. Cube. Fire up your imagination and dive into this world of fantasy this June.

Muddy Princess

The Muddy Princess Corporation has organized a 5 km obstacle course specifically meant for women. Women of all backgrounds and fitness levels are free to participate in this event for anywhere between $40 and $100. Don’t feel intimidated if you don’t feel fit enough to take part in this competition, the main purpose is not to see who will complete the course first but rather to have fun challenging oneself; running, climbing, crawling, sliding, balancing and, most importantly, laughing.

The best thing about this event is that there is no limit to the number of individuals who can participate, so you are free to invite as many of your girlfriends as you can gather, the more the merrier. However, if you are entering as an individual, there is no need to feel left out; once you are there, all princesses are part of the same, big family. As an added incentive, there will be staff assistance whenever an obstacle proves to be difficult for you, ensuring that everyone makes it through to the end after all is said and done. This event will kick off at 7 am at the SwitchbackMX, along William Flynn Highway, so don’t be late.
