Each year, the Highmark First Night group combines efforts with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to offer more than 100 events in the downtown area in celebration of New Year's Eve. The gala festivities mimic those offered at Times Square in New York City. A dazzling pyrotechnic presentation is one of the major attractions. Venture to one of the many city locations to view the display.
Fire & Ice Plaza
The cultural district in Pittsburgh is ground zero for the New Year's Eve festivities. The non-alcoholic party begins at 6:00 P.M. with family-friendly activities that include a parade at 8:00 P.M. Spectators enjoy a variety of live entertainment acts ranging from circus performers and live sculpture demonstrations to stand-up comedians and live music. A massive, illuminated orb drops from the sky at midnight followed by the extravagant fireworks display. Prospective guests need admission buttons to attend. The buttons are available on the First Night PGH website, at the Theater Square box office or at participating Giant Eagle stores.
Gateway Clipper
Locals and visitors alike have the unique opportunity to watch the sky light up via the waterfront. The Gateway Clipper ships offers two cruises that set sail at 9:30 P.M. and return to dock at 12:30 A.M. One of the vessels offers a late-night dinner along with cocktails. While aboard either ship, passengers have a front seat to the city's skyline and the illuminating celebration.
North Shore Riverfront Trail
The trail connects Heinz Field, PNC Park and the Rivers Casino, which makes journeying from indoor festivities to the viewing location simple. The area features cultural sites, entertainment options and restaurants where all might take in the evening's fun. The trail is ideal for anyone desiring to avoid the large crowds in the downtown area.
Point State Park
The park is situated at the tip of the downtown area and also serves as the starting point for the city's many trails. The Point has seating along the promenade overlooking the scenic riverfront. The destination is a prime spot for watching the nighttime sky light up at midnight.
Roberto Clemente Bridge
The 6th Street bridge connects the downtown region with PNC Park. There is a pedestrian walkway away from the street, which faces the skyline. From here, spectators get a great view over the river and the fireworks rising above the city.
Three Rivers Heritage Trail
The location on the trail that lies below Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the Roberto Clemente Bridge is a wonderful destination for all to see the fireworks. Many prefer the spot, as this section of pathway along the Allegheny River eliminates having to deal with vehicular traffic.
